Hi!
The Hospital is always seeking people to act as an Interperter in varied work situations.
However they declined my offer, when I described my skills to them, as being a Linguist!
One thing you probably don't know about me is my talent for speaking "Catonese"!
Over the many years of growing up in a house with cats as pets, I had learned to mimic the cats' varied calls to each other. I could easily reproduce the wavering purring meow that a mother cat uses to call her babies to her. It's a very soothing, alluring meow. The Momma cats would squint and wink their eyes at me, when they heard me impersonate them, as they were nusring their babies. Perhaps they were hoping I would offer a teat or two to feed their babies too!
I could also convincingly reproduce the angry challenging growl of quarrelling Tom Cats.
Once I had a Tom Cat that was protecting his turf ( our yard ) against a rival Tom Cat. The 2 cats were creating quite a ruckus with their bantering growls, and hisses. I slowly and quitely approached my Tom Cat from behind him. I stared at the other Tom Cat and started to hiss and growl menacingly towards him.
The rival Tom Cat's eyes about popped out of his head, as he was startled by what I was saying to him in "Catonese". His reaction to me was equally disturbing to my Tom Cat, who was now worried that he was being attacked from behind too.
He desperately wanted to see who was growling behind him, but he couldn't take his eyes off his attacker in front of him. I enhanced my growls and hisses till my Tom Cat could wait no more. He tried to look both ways, while trying to sneak a peak of the angry Tom (me) behind him, and his attacker in front of him. When he got a quick glimpse of me, he had a big shot of surprise when he realized I was the foe behind him. He took a worried double take in my direction, in disbelief.
When he realized I wasn't a foe, but an Ally; he had an "Aw-shucks! Expression on his face. I leaned down and picked him up, and growled one last time at the rival Tom. That cat scrammed so fast, I'm sure he had nightmares of me for weeks!"
I also can speak "Poocheneese"!
But can't we all?
TT
