I had gone to my Mother's for Sunday supper, yesterday. She served baked Iowa Pork Chops. Mom doesn't have a real descerning palate when it comes to taste. I commented that even though the Pork Chops were very tender, they did taste rather freezer burnt!
She said she hadn't noticed, but admitted they did come from her freezer. She assured me they weren't very old, besides Pork can be frozen for up to 6 months and still be good to serve. Besides how did I know what freezer burnt meat tasted like, she asked?
I said she had fed me a lot of freezer burnt meat when I was a child.
People from the Great Depression, know how to hord things, and aren't willing to get rid of anything without a fight.
I checked the date on the meat wrapper, it was dated 11/13/01. No wonder the meat was so tender!
....................................................................................
While at Mom's I received notification that my brother Bill ( 58 yrs old ) had passed away, yesterday (Sunday)10/16/05. At the time I was with my 91 yr old Mother at her home.
She was fretting over the fact that Bill had passed away in Atlanta, Georgia while doing volunteer work for FEMA.
Bill was always a very devoted Family oriented soul. So to have him pass away, all alone so far away from his family, is very heart wrenching for us.
As I was offering comfort to my Mother, assuring her that Bill was not alone at the time of his death, I told her God doesn't work that way. We are never truely alone when we die. Besides I assured her that Dad and all our other relatives that have passed on were certainly there to greet him!
As I was saying this to her I was looking at Bill's picture on the bookshelf, and I swear! He winked at me!
This was his way of validating what I had just told Mom!
TT
PS: I know this must seem odd that I'm posting a story about this, just a few scant hours passed his death. But I can't sleep, and I feel like vomitting all the time.
