When my husband and I first moved into our home I had already knew that it was haunted, because of an experience I had prior to us ever buying it. (the story is listed as New Awakening here on the board)
So I basically expected some events to occure after moving in, however nothing would quite prepare me for my first encounter and although now I can look back and (for the most part) laugh about it, the night it happened I wasn't laughing.
We had only lived in the house approximately 2 weeks and although we'd had some strange events that were happening, none of them were anything that really bothered anyone here. I did make a few comments in reguards to some issues but for the most part we just accepted the goings on and knew it would settle down after awhile.
My husband is more of the skeptical type, and so he of course used the logical answers for most things, at least until he ran out of answers which didn't take long in a house full of activity. But none of it was threatening and so it really wasn't a problem. And until that 1 night most things went un noticed on our parts.
Everyone else had gone to bed for the night and so I sat downstairs watching tv and just relaxing in the peace and quiet. We were still trying to get settled in and I'd spent alot of time unpacking and so the thought of having some time to myself sounded great, and so I was looking forward to being alone in the first time since we'd moved in.
The program I was watching had either just ended or had went to a commercial so I decided I'd take the hint to run upstairs to take a bathroom break then make myself some popcorn before going back to the tv. and into my so needed solitude. But my much desired time alone turned out to be more than I expected.
We only have 1 bathroom in the house it's upstairs. As I was headed up there I heard a sound behind me and stopped to look, it was our cat who was standing arch backed and hissing, (we all know how animals react and like I said I knew my house was haunted) so I really didn't think much of it.
However that changed fast, as I turned around to continue up the stairs I was standing face to face with an older lady. I could see her and she was as real as anyone else other than the fact that I could see right through her. And she had a smile on her face as if to say "it's ok I'm not going to bother you" but at the time that's exactly what it did.
I hate to admit this (I've had other encounters with full apparitions, but in MOST of those occasions I was expecting to see something so I was prepared) but on this occasion I wasn't prepared whatsoever. I stood on the staircase and litterally wet myself from fear. Then as fast as she appeared she was gone.
But by this time I had seen all I cared to and instead of continuing any further up the stairs (where my husband, and what could be called safety was) I turned
and retreated back down the stairs to afraid to go up and take the chance of another encounter.
I went to the basement and showered to clean myself off after my little accident which left me feeling both embarrassed and guilty. Here I was the big bad paranormal person and I'd just pissed all over myself because I'd seen a ghost. So I guess you could say my ego and or pride was wounded to.
After showering I went back up to the living room to sit and basically "lick my wounds" And I spent the rest of the night on the couch. When my husband got up the next morning I told him what I'd had happen and how I'd reacted. He sat and listened to me and then told me that maybe I had met the woman behind the voice I'd heard before moving here.
His words made alot of sense and so I made it my next goal to try and find out the history of our house. I spent the next few days talking to some of the older people in town and asking questions about any of the previous owners of our house. And I did find some very interesting information.
Apparently the family we bought the house from had only lived in the house for about a year, and had actually started looking for a new house just months after moving into the house. After they moved they tried using the house as a rental but were never able to keep tenants more than a couple months. And everyone always gave the same reason, this place was haunted.
Finally I decided to come right out and ask, there was 1 gentleman who was born and raised here so I got brave and described the woman I'd seen (leaving out the part about why I was asking) and to my surprise he went and pulled out a picture of the woman who looked exactly as I'd seen her the night standing smiling at me on my stairs.
Her name was Florence but everyone had called her Flo and her husband had lived in my house from the time they married until she was moved to a care facility and passed away. But the house had been handed down in her husbands family since they had purchased it from the original builder.
After I learned all of this I felt really bad, because I had spooked so bad from her innocent gesture of letting me see her. That was soon turned around a few days later though as I was down in the basement to do some laundry. I was just coming back down the stairs with the next load when once again Flo appeared.
Once again it was like seeing any other person but this time I wasn't scared. I looked at her and told her that I was very thankful for her helping me find this house and that she would always be welcome here as long as it was my home. She smiled at me and then she disappeared, but I knew we'd made a bond, and Flo would stay here with us until her spirit passes on.
