Near Newton There is an old area known as metz. There used to be a town there. The cemetary is quite old, known as the sugargrove cemetary( there is a winery just north about 3-5 miles.) Theres alot of urban legends of the area. alot have to do with the 1 lane bridge and surrounding area. There is actually a campground next to the bridge, no idea who owns it tho would love to do some summertime campouts out in this area . Anyways some of the legends are:
The metz mudman. A creature pitch black shadow that roams the land in this area, around the bridge, river, and RR tracks. legend has it that it is actually the ghost racer which-
The phantom racer. supposedly a couple of kids were racing one night on the old backroads. as they approched the 1 lane bridge, sure the other guy would chicken out at the last second, neither did. 1 guy fliped off the bridge, and died. it is said the mudman is the spirit of the racer. If your lucky, and approch the bridge the right way ( from the south end heading north) you will notice headlights fallowing you, if they get close enough, you will see that there is no car. My mom has witnessed this.
The Glowing/dissapearing tombstone. Since they have paved the gravel road, it is harder to actually spot this interesting and amusing tombstone. After dark it does glow( is because of the mineral used in the stone) A neat feature is a trick on the eyes. the stone is actually father in the cemetery then what it appears. as you drive up to it you swear its on the edge, next to the fence, but as you get up to it, its not there. Landmarks near it would seem to place it close to the road, but there is no stone there.
the other legend, which i at a time thought was just that, is of the screaming witch
Its said long ago there was a witch in the area, that was blamed for some hardtimes that fell apon the community, before it ever became a town. Legend has it, when the settlers went to hang her, she ran off, turning into a black cat.
My occurance:
- One night last summer Jon and I decided to take his girlfriend out to see the tombstone. As I have posted, I am a bit sensitve to the paranormal. Jon has learned over time to trust my feelings, and always gets a laugh when I get a wild hair and tell him were going to find a new cemetary today, and we do, without knowing where it really is.
Well, as we went out to the metz area, jon was telling his gf about the screaming witch, and the other stories. We turned on the road leading to the cemetary, the first stop. All the sudden I got a sinking feeling in my gut, and told jon- hey, something dont feel right, we may cut this short.
We got to the cemetary, nothing unusual. Jon asked me if we should go ahead and head back or continue. I decided to continue. Now the road is a bit of a backward S curve, past the old church, down a hill till it flattens out near the RR tracks.
We headed down the road, and as we were comming out of the end of the S curve, i saw something glint in the road ahead. I slowed down, and asked if anyone else saw it. MY gut was turning, and hair on end. We drove closer, and all the sudden a Black cat reared its head up off the road. I stoped , it was staring all the way up at us in the car. I flashed the lights on and off, from low beams to brights, honked the horn, reved the engine, creeped forward, the cat made no move, no twitch. it was Dead center in our lane, just staring at us. I pulled a U turn, and headed back up the hill. The hill isent to steep, but with the petal pushed to the floor, the car couldent go past 35 miles up the hill. Its a brand new car, 2003, and ive never had the problem with this car anywhere, it is pretty quick. Once we got up by the church, its like the car sprang to life. Every once and awhile the car will seem to stall on the Hill untill im at the curch.
Strange happening during the last 2 sentences, I herd my name whispered loudly in my room. Everyone else was in the living room. bleh. Will post more later a little shaken, due to some weird things these last few days
