In the ultimate wisdom of the Powers that be, decisions over the years have caused our Hospital to down size. So many of the former Patient Care areas, now lay quiet and empty. One RN that I used to work with, would take her coffee breaks on one of these unused Units, so she could study in piece and quiet. One night I received a call from her. She was extremely frantic and wanted me to come to her assistance immediately. She said that we had an intruder on the empty Unit she was on, and they were crying. She told me to come directly to the Nurses' Station on this Unit where she was, to rescue her. I have to admit I was scared. I didn't know what or whom I would encounter as I made my way down the long darkened hallway to the Nurses' Station. When I got to the Nurses' Station Shirley was frantic with fear. She claimed she had been studying when she began to hear someone crying. "THERE! Did you here that!" she exclaimed! I listened intently, and I could here this hauntingly muffled "Couooo...couooo...coo" kind of like a child's scared crying sounds while they hid in the closet . But this was no child! I burst out laughing! I said, "Shirley that's the pigeons on the windowsill, outside!"
