October 7, 2000 and September 2004. Located at Broadway and Williams Street Reportings Researched: This was the first state prison in Illinois, built in 1833. Unfortunately, this is all that is left. It held Confederate prisoners during the Civil War and saw much death and disease, including an outbreak of small pox. People have reported seeing apparitions on the grounds around the remains of the prison. One man reported having seen a man, barefooted, wearing pants that ended at his ankles, and a dirty shirt. He thought the man was homeless, but then he disappeared before his eyes. Do the ghosts of Confederate soldiers and their guards still roam the grounds?
