The House That Never Was
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The house that never was is an odd tale, the person that told me is one that holds a position of trust in the local community where he lived. He in fact is the local Reverend of a small country village.
I'll start where all tales should start at the beginning.
It had been so hot these last few weeks and Tom had been working maybe a little to hard a little work here a little work there and rather a lot over there, so when he had a free afternoon he loaded his cycle and went down the the local lake, he loved fishing but rarely had the chance to do it these days, what with the mother and baby club, the bell ringers and the youth club to organize!
This was indeed the rarest opportunity! so he was going to make the most of it, he sat on the bank and opened his bag his wife Maureen had packed a hansom lunch egg and cress sandwiches a flask of hot tea and a home baked rock cake for afters, inside the small floral tin these was 4 chocolate biscuits made by the womens guild ! What a treat indeed!
As he lay back waiting for a bite he saw a small boy, dressed in rather old fashioned clothes he was on the edge of the opposite river bank in his had a small stick, which he poked in the water, curious the Rev watched before calling out, hey boy! what you doing the small boy said catching a fish sir, the Rev chuckled to himself, where do you live? he asked River Cottage said the boy there and pointed to a cottage that the Rev had not noticed until that moment "do you want the feel of a real fishing rod? to this the boy leaped up and said ohh yes please sir! over the bridge then said the Rev! He waited a few minutes but there was no boy worried he packed up and walked up stream, no boy! he walked over the bridge and stopped where was that cottage, walking further he found no boy and no cottage, still worried he walked back to his bike and cycled home, he told his wife who said if i where you I'd tell Barry the local policeman which he did, but Barry said but there's no cottage out there Rev never has been, I saw it said the Rev, ok said Barry then call on Fred Smith he owns that land ask him about the cottage!
So he wet off, he knocked on the door of the farm and Fred's wife Betty opened the door, come in Rev she said sit down have some tea and a cake, she sat and listened as the Rev told his tale, then the Rev noticed she'd turned white as a sheet, are your alright he asked, I have to get Fred she said I won't keep you, she was gone about 10 Min's when she returned Fred was behind her he also looked rather pale.
He sat down and spoke slowly. Rev what I have to tell you is gods honest truth be it hard to believe!
I had a brother many years ago, his name was Issac Smith when he was 18 he left to try to make his fortune on a ship bound for far off lands, he took his wife and his son, he said that when they'd made their fortune they'd return and he'd build a cottage for Sarah his wife by the stream they were on their way back when tragedy struck and the ship went down with all hands, I thought he was never to realize his dream, but from what you said, then I believe in death he did!
